Why the hottest skill of 2024 is becoming irrelevant, and what's replacing it.
Learn prompt engineering was the advice of 2024. By late 2025 it's already outdated. Prompt engineering assumed models needed careful, crafted instructions, and for GPT-3.5 and early GPT-4 that was true: you needed chain-of-thought, few-shot examples, role-playing setups. But models got better, fast. Modern models understand context, nuance, and intent without elaborate scaffolding, and the skill ceiling on writing better prompts has flattened. Three things matter more now: system design (architecting AI into workflows rather than one-off chat boxes), evaluation (judging output quality quickly), and tool orchestration (chaining tools and APIs into pipelines). The best prompt is knowing what question to ask, and that's expertise, not engineering.
